GMO’s; what are they and how we can avoid them:

Basically GMO’s or Genetically Modified Organisms are man made products. Individuals will take specific genes of let’s say a fish and inject it into the genes of a tomato in hopes to produce a new trait in the tomato such as frost tolerance. The latest in the news is the GE (genetically engineered; same thing as GMO) salmon. A company has spliced a growth hormone into Atlantic Salmon so it will grow much faster than normal and produce more fish in less time than nature allows.

Sometimes us humans like to think we are smarter than nature … I beg to differ! GMO’s have not had sufficient testing to be deemed safe for consumption. Several studies prove the opposite to be true. So, now that we know a little about what GMO’s are, how do we avoid them? This is a large challenge considering the majority of the corn, soy, cotton, canola, and sugar beets are GE.

One way to avoid them is to purchase these items as organically certified. Another way is to try to limit or eliminate these items in your diet and dine largely on fresh produce. The Center for Food Safety has a shopper’s guide available that will help us choose non-GMO products when we go shopping.

Becoming aware of GMO’s and how they can cause possible danger not only to humans but to the environment as a whole is one step towards making vigorous choices. Knowledge is power! Sharing this knowledge is even more powerful! 🙂
